Angong Niuhuang Wan clears heat and detoxifies, calms convulsions, and opens the orifices.
It is indicated for febrile diseases with pathogenic heat entering the Pericardium, high fever with convulsions, coma with delirium, as well as stroke-induced coma, and symptoms seen in encephalitis, meningitis, toxic encephalopathy, cerebral hemorrhage, and septicemia showing the above presentations.

Properties ()

This product appears as large honey pills, yellow-orange to reddish-brown in color, sometimes coated with gold foil.
After removing the gold coating, the pill is yellow-orange to reddish-brown.
It has a strong aromatic fragrance and a slightly bitter taste.


 

Functions and Indications (功能主治)

Clears heat and detoxifies, calms fright and convulsions, opens the orifices.
Indicated for:

  • Febrile diseases with heat invading the Pericardium
  • High fever with convulsions
  • Coma and delirium
  • Stroke coma
  • Encephalitis, meningitis
  • Toxic encephalopathy
  • Cerebral hemorrhage
  • Septicemia with the above symptoms

 

Specification ()

Each pill weighs 3 g.


 

Dosage and Administration (用法用量)

Oral administration:

  • Adults: 1 pill once daily
  • Children under 3 years: 1/4 pill once daily
  • Children 4–6 years: 1/2 pill once daily
  • Or follow physician’s instructions

 

Adverse Reactions (不良反)

Reports indicate that improper use may cause hypothermia.
Rare cases of allergic reactions have also been reported.

Precautions (注意事)

  1. This formula is designed for heat-induced closed disorders;
    not suitable for cold-induced closed syndromes.
  2. Contains musk, which is aromatic and dispersing; may harm fetal Qi — use cautiously during pregnancy.
  3. During medication, maintain a light diet; avoid spicy or greasy foods to prevent generating heat and phlegm.
  4. Contains cinnabar and realgar; avoid long-term use or overdose.
    Use cautiously in patients with liver or kidney insufficiency.
  5. If symptoms such as cold limbs, aversion to cold, pale complexion, cold sweating, feeble pulse appear—indicating transition from closed syndrome to collapse—stop the medication immediately.
  6. For patients with high fever and coma who cannot take oral medication, nasogastric administration may be required.
  7. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and elderly patients should use under medical supervision.
  8. Use with caution in individuals with allergic tendencies.
  9. Children must use under adult supervision.
  10. If taking other medications, consult a doctor before use.
  11. Remove wax coating, plastic shell, and cellophane before taking.
    Do not swallow the entire pill whole.
